Anesthesia Tech Pipeline Program

2022-2023 Cohort (Front) Roshuna Harris, (Back) Mya Ellington-Williams

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Anesthesia Tech Pipeline Program is an educational and work experience designed to foster mentorship and a structured path into medical school for Underrepresented Minority (URM) students. Evidence shows that diverse teams encourage innovation and improve outcomes for patients and families, particularly when members of the healthcare teams match the populations they serve. UAMS Vision 2029 aims to enhance diversity at all levels of the organization and to create a safe and inclusive learning and working environment for everyone. The anesthesia tech pipeline program is a partnership between the UAMS Department of Anesthesiology, the UAMS College of Medicine, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and Philander Smith College. Our mission is to support the College of Medicine to recruit and retain highly qualified URM students with strong connections to underserved communities in Arkansas.

Working as an anesthesia tech is an outstanding way to get an inside look at the healthcare system, to meet professionals of many different backgrounds, and connect with mentors. Anesthesia Techs work clinically 20-25 hours per week as members of the anesthesia care team. They complete on the job training and become proficient in preparing and maintaining equipment for all types of anesthetics. They work everywhere that anesthetics are delivered, including the operating rooms, the labor & delivery unit, the gastroenterology suite, and the radiology areas.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS:

This is a one to two year program that includes a weekly didactic session that focuses on mentorship, professionalism, MCAT preparation, study skills, the application process, writing and application essays, medical school interviews, an introduction to research, and alternative pathways.
