TRANSGENDER GUIDE TO TRANSITIONING & GENDER AFFIRMATION IN THE WORKPLACE

How to Change Department Single-Stall Bathrooms

UAMS, Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is continuing its efforts toward co-creating a culture of belonging and inclusion with the institution-wide launch of UAMS GENDER-INCLUSIVE BATHROOM INITIATIVE. It is well documented that transgender, non-binary, and other gender nonconforming people face challenges when attempting to use binary gender designated restrooms in public locations. At minimum, public binary designated restrooms force openly trans and non-binary people to risk their personal safety to access a basic resource, and this issue extends itself to many other people who may simply appear androgenous regardless of gender.

In 2019, DDEI led the effort to change Administration West’s single-stall bathrooms to gender inclusive bathrooms. Since that time, we are excited to announce there are several departments across UAMS making the same inclusive changes.

UAMS Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in partnership with LBGTQ+ Subcommittee, UAMS Space Committee and Creative Services have developed an easy-to-follow process, standardized signage, and various packages for purchase in Creative Services.

Step 1. Identify and record the room numbers for the single-stalled bathrooms in your area.

Step 2.  Make a UAMS Move / Add / Change (MAC) Request using Move, Add, Change (MAC) Request (uams.edu)

Step 3. In the spirit of inclusivity, below is an example of verbiage teams/departments can use to send other departments in their area to inform them of upcoming changes. Email should be sent by department leadership.

Hello Team Administration West,In an effort to be intentionally inclusive, the Center for Diversity Affairs is requesting all single stall bathrooms located in the Administration West Building be changed to uni-sex bathrooms. We truly appreciate your open-mindedness as we as strive to create a more inclusive community here at UAMS. If you would like to share your thoughts on the change you are welcome to email Dr. Brian Gittens, Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion BGittens@uams.edu or Emily Freeman/Zack Lewis, Co-Chairs of the LGBTQ+ Subcommittee ESFreeman@uams.edu ZBLewis@uams.edu We welcome your feedback. Have a great day. Thank you for all you do.
